The Aretha’s Jazz Cafe was very elegant and intimate. There was a live band, food, and drinks. Letti, Josiah, Draya, Draya’s friend Corey, and I sat at a table in the front of the stage. There was no dance floor, but there was no reason for one. Everyone there was there for the food, good vibes, talent, and spirits.

My eyes scanned the crowd, looking for the man of the hour. I didn’t see him, but even if he didn’t happen to show up, I wouldn’t be mad at all. Who was I fooling? I was only here because of him. I missed out on making tips tonight to come by and support him, so if he didn’t show up tonight, our newfound friendship would be over.

“This is so nice and so classy,” Draya announced, eyes scanning the place.

“It really is. What are we eating though, because I’m starving?” Letti said, looking over the menu.

“I hear their wings and fries are pretty good,” Josiah said.

“I’m so tired of chicken… Let’s do the rack of lambs.” Letti suggested.

I nodded. “That sounds good. Can you order me some with a Coke? I’m going to go to the restroom,” I asked her as I stood. The men stood with me as Letti nodded, and I walked off in search of the restroom. Following the signs, I went down the stairs and walked inside. Even the restrooms were beautiful, with a lounging area on one side and the stalls on the other. I handled my business then washed my hands. Making sure my makeup was intact, checking my lace front, giving myself a once-over, and making sure the bandu top and skirt I wore looked good, I headed back up the stairs. As soon as I got to the top of them, I stopped mid-stride, seeing Carlos standing there, holding the hand of a woman I saw come to Tomorrow’s a few times. It was as if he smelled me because his eyes quickly found mine as he smiled.

“I’m going to go to the ladies’ room. I’ll be right back,” the woman said as she walked off.

“Well, if it isn’t Lex. Aren’t you supposed to be at the bar right now?”

I scoffed. “No. I called off, remember?”

“Oh yeah, that’s right. You know that it’s bad to lie to your boss.”

“I didn’t lie to you at all. I told you I wasn’t coming in because I had something to do.”

“And this is something to do?”

“Absolutely.”

“Hmph.” He hummed as his eyes scanned my attire.

“I’m surprised you’re here. You never leave that bar.”

“Yeah, well, I do have a life outside of Tomorrow’s.”

“I see. Well, enjoy your night.”

“Hold up. Who are you here with?”

“That’s not any of your concern, Carlos. Shouldn’t you be with your date?”

He smiled. “I am with my date. You heard her say she had to use the restroom.”

“Then excuse me.”

“You’re not going to tell me who you came here with?”

“Car—”

“Oh, there she is…” I heard it coming from my left. I turned my head and saw Noah approaching, and my damn pearl thumped.
